Pictures from Uganda

A few snaps from Lakwatomer Village in Gulu District

These photos are from October 2011 when I met with some of the women from Tetugu Uganda Association (TUA) who make beads for BOA.  Bead making is a part time activity that these women are able to come together and do, on average once a week.  The small money they get from this activity compliments what they earn from other small scale business activities such as farming, selling produce and fish in the market, and tailoring.

In 2012 I was back in Lakwatomer with Sarosh Rizvi from Kleos MFG, a micro finance group based in Calgary, AB.  Many of the women shown in these photos received small loans from Kleos to grow their businesses.  Interviewing the women we learned about how they hope to raise the standards of living for their families, investing their extra earnings in paying school fees, improving nutrition at home and investing in their own local savings and loan groups (SACCOs).

The light in Northern Uganda is fantastic for shooting photos, and the many different colours of the clothing, the landscape contrasts beautifully with the blue skies and red earth.  I'm definitely no photographer, but I hope you will enjoy these.  Thanks to all those who helped with editing and touching up the photos.  Slowly by slowly I'll learn.
